One Stop Trop

March 15, 2013
Good intentions brought Tropicana field to St. Petersburg in 1986 and now nearly 30 years later, good intentions may be pointing to a different use!  The home of MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays could be designed to become a new home for hundreds of residents, as well as businesses and retail.  As the Rays work through the process for a new stadium, enthusiasts and developers discuss the pros and cons of using the Trop to revitalize this portion of the city through reurbanization.  High-rises, shops, restaurants, parking garages, office buildings, and public transit could potentially rejuvenate the Tropicana’s 85 acres of asphalt and remaining debt. Tropicana field could become the new one-stop Trop!

There are also heat maps in which you can select demographic data, consumer expenses and labor force information.

Fiscal Cliff Notes

January 3, 2013

Crises averted? For now. Last minute wheeling and dealing on Capitol Hill resulted in a bill that no one really knows the contents of and a lot of mixed feelings. Investors however, can take a brief sigh of relief; “brief” being the key word. With more budget instability on the way, investors need to keep a close eye on the upcoming months as decisions in February and March will reveal spending cuts and the federal borrowing limit.

Light Rail Recommended for Pinellas

February 15, 2012
The Pinellas Alternatives Analysis Project Advisory Committee has recommended construction of 24 miles of light rail transit in Pinellas County. The newly proposed light rail would offer connections between St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Pinellas Park and Gateway.

In Minneapolis during a recent visit I experienced firsthand the efficiency of light rail. It does not compromise retail or business as some suggest. In fact, it eliminates traffic congestion and encourages walking.

Light rail in Tampa Bay is long overdue and the lack of it is one of the area’s biggest stumbling blocks. If we can connect the corridors in our cities and then connect our cities, it would be a great collaborative effort.
